My Website Is Down: A 10-Minute Checklist for Tanzanian Business Owners
By Jumbe Nylon, Founder & CTO, SakuraHost. Updated October 15, 2026.
Short answer
When your website is down, check four things in order: whether hosting and the domain are paid and active, whether your DNS still points to the right place, what the error message says, and whether disk space or a recent change caused it. Most outages are found in ten minutes, and most are billing or DNS problems.
Key takeaways
- Start with the simple causes: unpaid hosting, expired domain, DNS changes.
- The message you see points to the cause: 500 means website code, a parked page means DNS.
- Test from another network to rule out your own device.
- When you contact support, send the website address, the exact message and what changed.
A customer calls to say your website is not loading. Your first instinct is to start clicking around the hosting panel, but most of the time the cause is not technical at all. Hosting expired, the domain lapsed, or somebody changed a DNS record last week and nobody noticed until now.
The fastest way to find the problem is to check from the simplest cause to the hardest. This ten-minute checklist is the same order our support team uses, and it works for WordPress sites, custom sites and web apps hosted on SakuraHost or elsewhere.
Minute 1: is it down for everyone or just you?
Open the site on mobile data, ask a colleague on another network, or use a public "is it down" checker. If other people can open it, your device or network is the problem: clear the cache, restart your router, or flush your DNS cache. If nobody can open it, continue down the list.
Minutes 2 to 3: check billing and status
Check hosting
Sign in to the client area and open Services. The hosting must show Active. A suspended service has an unpaid invoice behind it: overdue invoice and suspension.
Check the domain
Open My Domains and check the expiry date. An expired domain stops the site and email: domain expired, and our full guide what to do when a domain expires.
Pay and wait
If something is unpaid, pay it. Services come back within about 10 minutes of payment confirmation.
Minutes 4 to 5: check DNS
If billing is fine and the site still does not open, check whether the domain points to the right place. Typical signs of a DNS problem are a parked or default page, a "server not found" message, or a certificate warning on only one version of your address.
- Did anyone change nameservers or DNS records recently, for example when connecting a platform or moving hosting?
- Does the root domain have an A record and www a CNAME? See website works on www but not without it.
- A default or "IP address changed" page means an old A record: domain shows a parked page.

Minutes 6 to 8: read the error message
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 500 Internal Server Error | A problem in the website code, a plugin or the .htaccess file | See 500 error causes and fixes and check the error log |
| Blank white page | A PHP error, often a plugin or theme update | Turn on error logging, disable the last plugin |
| Error establishing a database connection | Wrong database details or a database that is full or down | See WordPress database error |
| Site can't be reached or server not found | DNS or an expired domain | Check domain and DNS |
| Certificate warning | Certificate does not match the name | See certificate error on www or root |
| Loads extremely slowly or times out | Resource limits, heavy plugin or traffic spike | See website loading slowly |
The error log in cPanel often names the exact file and line: cPanel error logs.
Minutes 9 to 10: disk space, limits and recent changes
- Disk space or file count full. Uploads fail, WordPress breaks and email bounces. See disk space or inode limit reached.
- A recent change. Think back: a plugin update, a theme change, new code, a PHP version change or a DNS edit. Undo the last change first.
- Malware. Strange redirects, unknown files or sudden spam signal a hack. See scan and remove malware.
If you took a backup before the change, restoring it is the fastest fix. If you did not, make that your next job: back up your website yourself.
What to send support so we can fix it faster
- The website address and the domain name.
- The exact message you see, ideally a screenshot.
- When it started and what you changed just before.
- Whether it fails on mobile data too.
Open a ticket from the client area for the best result, or call 0758 309 999 (fastest line) or 0753 930 000 (longer wait) if your business is stopped. More options: how to reach SakuraHost support fast.
Stop the next outage before it happens
- Turn on auto-renewal for hosting and domains.
- Keep your account email current so reminders reach you.
- Keep your own backups, taken before every major change.
- Write down your DNS records somewhere safe.
- Test the site on mobile data after every change.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my website down?
The most common causes are an unpaid hosting invoice, an expired domain, a DNS change, a website code error or a full disk. Check them in that order.
What does 500 Internal Server Error mean?
The server could not run the website code. It is usually a plugin, a theme, a code change or a damaged .htaccess file. The error log shows the cause.
My site works for me but not for customers. Why?
Different networks cache DNS differently, so some people may still see an old address. Test on mobile data and wait for the cache to refresh.
How long until a suspended site comes back after I pay?
Within about 10 minutes of payment confirmation.
Will I lose my website if hosting is suspended?
Not if you pay promptly. Long-unpaid services can be terminated, so act quickly.
What should I send support?
The website address, the exact message or a screenshot, when it started and what you changed.
